There are varying effects that animal farming causes to the world depending with locations but all in all, as far as global destruction is concerned, animal farming is one of the leading causes of the same. In general, a combination of animal farming in the entire world has been found to be one of the leading causes of the planet destruction since time immemorial.
40% of the dry land surface of the world is used for the upkeep of the more than seen billion human populations. 30% of this land is used in keeping and rising up animals such as poultry, cattle, pigs among others. There is not a single human activity that uses up the natural resources at the disposal of man like the animal keeping does. For instance, these animals alone consume 33% of the total fresh water at the disposal of man. This is just an average conclusion of what happens in the world. The mode of raising and nurturing animals in one region has to be proven to be different from another region. As a result, there are varied impacts to the resources with some areas being more severely affected than the others.
Different researches in the world have ended up with striking statistics which underscore how the meat industries from different regions impact the planet. Below is a synopsis of some of the conclusions reached upon.
- On average, a cow will feed on between 75kgs and 300kgs of greens or dry matter to produce just 1kg of protein. These figures in some areas go up to 2000kg of dry matter/1 kg of protein. What a waste of resources? These figures mean that the animals are really wasting resources bearing in mind that these animals eat more than 2 billion tones of grains every year globally. If man could have directly eaten these grains, we can have a stable and reliable food security in the world.
- The rate of land pollution in the world has really increased a factor that can be attributed to the high number of animals especially in large herds. Third world countries still have people practicing pastoralist farming. These animals are known to produce green house gases either through their end products during value addition or naturally. Poultry and swine score the highest here.
- The factory animal farming in the USA has got its pros and cons. The pro is that it is more environmentally efficient as much produce can be gotten from a small piece of land. However, it poses much danger to the public’s health since there is an overuse of antibiotics not forgetting that too much air and pollution is enhanced. In a nutshell, the only thing that the factory farming does is to transfer the pollution from land to air and water. This is still pollution and harmful to the environment.
In a nutshell, though animal keeping has got its many pros, the cons obviously outdo the advantages. You would be better off if you did crop production than extensive animal farming. This would not only be advantageous to you but will also save the planet.
